Fender Standard Jazz Bass: Review

By Janus Ng

The Fender Standard Jazz Bass was first released in 1960. Back then it was used primarily by professional musicians of different musical genre for its rich tone. Upgraded in 2009 the Standard Jazz Bass offered various features including the shielded body cavities, modern single-coil pickups, medium jumbo frets and vintage bridge.

Sound:

This Fender Standard Jazz Bass is great in covering a wide range of styles from rock to funk, finger and slap. At half volume it has all the smooth tones you want. It's kind of like an electric upright, deep lows, punchy highs, and smooth mids. It has an attacking sound and a warm, mellow tone. It's a big step up from the Squier in terms of its sounding results.

Ease of Use:

The setup from the shop was playable. However, it needs to be reset to make it play better, especially the neck and the intonation. The string height needs to be reset, too. If you are really into this bass, you can consider replacing the bridge pickup. It's still a good bargain at the current offering price.

Features:

This Fender Jazz Bass is Mexican-made. It does not come with a lot of features, but it's simple and plays great.

* Body: Alder

* Neck: Maple, Modern "C"-Shape (Urethane Finish)

* Fingerboard: Rosewood or Maple, 9.5 in. Radius (241 mm)

* No. of Frets: 20 Medium Jumbo Frets

* Pickups: 2 "New" Standard Jazz Bass Single-Coil Pickups

* Controls: Volume 1 (Neck Pickup), Volume 2 (Bridge Pickup), Master Tone

* Pickup Switching: None

* Bridge: Standard Vintage Style with Single Groove Saddles

* New Features: New Pickups and new vintage-style Jazz Bass control knobs, Fender transition logo

* Accessories: Standard Gig Bag

Overall:

The quality of the bass is worth the money. If possible, you may swap the bridge for a Leo Quann Badass Bass Bridge. Further, you can even replace the pickups with DiMarzio pickups to get greater sounds. Overall it plays a lot better than many other entry basses.
