Work Related Asbestos Disease

By Clare Westwood

A man who has recently been diagnosed with mesothelioma the 'asbestos cancer' has been telling people of the dangers that asbestos poses in a bid to make them more well known. 64 year old Maurice Jardin was just about to retire when he discovered he had the disease, which he is thought to have contracted in his workplace. He has now began campaigning to reach out to other people and his ex colleagues to highlight the dangers.

Mr Jardin was awarded a six figure sum in compensation although he has stated that the money will be going towards the cost of his treatment. Mr Jardin has declared, "I'd give everything back just to be normal," he said about the compensation payout, adding that he just wanted people to truly recognise the danger of asbestos "I'd heard of it, but I was not aware of how bad it was."

The disease was diagnosed by Mr Jardin's physician in June this year and came due to him complaining of horrible pains in his side. The disease came as a shock to him as he had just retired after going through his whole life having never taken a day off work due to ill health.

His doctor consulted with a lawyer and pretty soon it was discovered that the cause of the disease was hi working in a factory which had an asbestos roof. In the 1990's the roof was replaced and the work took three weeks to complete. Mr Jardin was made to stand underneath to make sure other staff members did not enter. Part of the roof caved in and landed on the floor which then resulted in Mr Jardin having to clean it up and becoming covered in dust containing asbestos.

Due to the dust on his clothing Mr Jardin's wife and daughter were also tested for mesothelioma as they had potentially come into contact with the dust too.
