"Rock Dust Light Star" - Funky groove with Horns

By Triggers Dave

Jamiroquai were formed in 1992. Initially they were the most important component in the 90s London-based acid jazz movement, next to groups like Incognito, the James Taylor Quartet, the Brand New Heavies, Galliano, and Corduroy. Subsequent albums have explored other musical directions such as pop, rock and electronica. Frontman is singer Jay Kay, he formed the band and is the only permanent member. Jamiroquai have sold more than 25 million albums worldwide.

The band had four No.1 albums in the UK, the first was "Emergency on Planet Earth" (1993). "The Return of the Space Cowboy" (1994) hit No.2, as did their American breakthrough "Travelling Without Moving" (1996). "Virtual Insanity" became their biggest UK hit (reaching No.3), and featured a video that brought international acclaim and won them four MTV Video Music Awards in 1997.

In 1998, Jamiroquai had their first and only UK No.1, "Deeper Underground". Their 4th album "Synkronized" (1999) topped the UK charts and featured two more hit singles. "A Funk Odyssey" (2001) also topped the album chart; their latest hit is "Feels Just Like it Should", from 2005's Dynamite.

"Rock Dust Light Star" has been written entirely by the band. It was written between Jay's home studio in Buckinghamshire, Hook Manor Studios in Oxfordshire and Thailand. The album showcases a different side to Jay's voice, which is slightly more laidback. Jay Kay is thereby following a current trend that makes rappers to singers and is bringing hip-hop closer to soul music.

"Rock Dust Light Star" is groovy and tight, which the past three albums weren't so much, it's more consistent and it tops expectations of fans and critics. What's missing is the proclaimed "new direction" the band intended to take, although I 'm not missing anything. Jamiroquai will tour the UK and Europe in March and April 2011.
