An Introduction To Singing High: How To Sing With A Full Vocal Range

By Josh Johnson

The key to increasing your vocal range is exercising your vocal cords. Warm ups are important for singers just like stretching is important for athletes. The more you practice, the fuller your voice can be. Not only will this help you learn singing high with a full vocal range, but it will also help you avoid damaging your voice.

Vocal exercises are also how you increase your vocal range and the first of these focusses on breathing support. This is because you use more breath when singing high. Every time you warm up try going a little higher or lower each time.

As you practice your warm ups you can start to push your range a little further. Be careful not to push too much too fast, otherwise you will damage your vocal cords.

Vocal warm ups can be sung on "la" or any other syllable. Do not try to sing something uncomfortably high straight off, or you may damage your vocal cords. They can also be sung using the buzz or lip roll to warm up your breath support. There is a vocal warm up that is sung on each note of the scale all the way up to your highest point of your range by singing the Solfege.

After getting your breathing muscles going you need to focus on your upper resonance also known as your head voice. Try to experience your voice coming from your sinuses and forehead as you sing higher. Start one note at a time, try singing intervals like 1 3 5 8 5 3 1, or do mi so do so mi do, then continue up the scales to your higher range. A different exercise to try for your high range is making a yawn-slide or sighing sound. Start with the highest part of your range and sigh out decreasing your range. Try this a few times.

The more you practice and warm up well, the fuller your range can become over time. Vocal exercises will keep your vocal cords strong and build your range. Practice with a few at a time and add more if you are going to be singing for a long time.
