How Important Is An Auto Beat Match Counter To DJing?

By Kenneth Maceyak

Do DJs need an auto beat matching counter for DJing, you ask? Well, I guess it's a question that cannot be answered simply by yes or no. Beat matching is an art form that comes along with being a DJ.

It's but natural for a starting-out DJ to want to use his turntable's auto beat counter as often as possible. There is nothing wrong with that especially when you are just starting out. Let me give you an example. If you have the Numark TTX1Direct Drive Turntable, you can use its auto beat counter. Just place the record on the platter, then the needle on the record, and the glowing LCD screen will show the beats per minute.

What the auto beat counter does is help you calculate the beats per minute of a song.

The TTX1's built in auto beat counter gives you a good advantage to mixing because now you are able to use your auto beat counter to find out the beats per minute of any song you want and mix songs that have the same beats per minute or close to it anyway.

All DJs need a good sense of rhythm and timing and that is what an auto beat counter can help them to achieve. However, you are not 100% sure that a BPM counter will give you the correct beat of a song for your beat matching task. You will find this out the more you use your DJ equipment.

The time comes when DJs discover that they can do without an auto beat counter as they become more familiar with their records and more comfortable with their equipment.

What the auto beat counter is for is primarily to give you an idea of a record's speed. Yes, you can match beats with it but you don't have to depend on it all the time. Don't consider the BPM counter to be your lifeline support. Let it aide you in developing your sense of rhythm and timing.

Beat matching is an art that once you have learned will allow you to mix music a lot faster and easier. You can do a repertoire of mixes and please your audience.

Using your auto BPM counter is probably more helpful when you are listening to record with a more obscure beat pattern. In the same manner are music with a more upbeat tempo and whose rhythm is not easy to capture. In cases like these, you can benefit from using an automatic beat counter.

As you have previously been cautioned, don't let an auto BPM counter be a sort of a life-saving device for you. No machine can top a DJ's sense of rhythm and timing; he just have to practice it to perfection.
