Why Pearl Jam Made History

By Jonathan McKnight

As I was reading a music article last week I came across something really surprising. There was a survey of American music fans on whom they thought was the greatest Rock band in American music history. The result was that Pearl Jam had the most votes of any other American band.

Now if you were to ask them about alternative rock bands. Or if you were to poll people of 30 years old or under then this would probably not be surprising. But this was not the case in this survey.

It is not that I do not like Pearl Jam. I think that they play some very good music. I was just so convinced that there were a lot of other bands above Pearl Jam in the actual pecking order.

But needless to say I was wrong. All the other bands that I could think of either came from somewhere other than America, or did not manage to compile as many hits a Pearl Jam.

Wilco and the White stripes must not have been around long enough. Bon Jovi or Journey must not have had as many hits. Then there are Billy Joel and Bob Dylan, but this category was for Rock band not solo artist.

Think as I might I could not come up with any other band to beat Pearl Jam.

Without any evidence to the contrary, I will just have to go with the popular consensus that Pearl jam are the greatest Rock band in American music history.

From pioneering the alternative rock movement in the early 90's, Eddie Vedder and his band have evolved with the times. The Seattle band have however tried and succeeded to stay true to their roots in this genre of music. This has not only kept the loyal fans devoted to them, it has also paved the way for a new generation of fans too. Therefore I must concede that Pearl Jam is the greatest Rock band in American music history.
