Two Options for Learning Piano

By Lawrence Collins

When you first begin learning to play the piano you'll probably get a little overwhelmed. Most people never consider how challenging becoming a good pianist can be. But that certainly doesn't mean that it's impossible. As a matter of fact, there are two very different ways of approaching piano learning. It all depends on what kind of pianist you want to be.

Learning to play classical music would be the best method to follow to achieve piano excellence. If you want to have the ability to play a wide variety of music, learning how to "sight read" is essential. Learning piano without learning how to read music is a lot like moving to a foreign country and not being able to speak the language. Obviously if you moved to Paris without learning at least a few basic words and phrases, your new life would be very difficult indeed!.The same holds true for the Piano. You can't expect to advance to a good level of Piano performance without the ability to read music.

There are certainly some prodigies in the world who are able to reproduce entire songs by ear and memory, but if you were a prodigy you would already know. If that's not the case, and you want to be able to play classical music, learning to read music is mandatory

However, there is a faster and easier way of learning to play piano,if all you want to do is be able to play your favorite songs.Chording is the other style. Every song ever written is based on a melody and rhythm. All music is made up of 12 major and 12 minor keys.Scales within these keys are the foundations of Classical music. You don't have to concern yourself with these scales when you use the chording method.

Almost every piece of sheet music includes the specific notes required to play the song as it is written, including the keys to the chords that the scales are built around. In other words, just by learning how to play all the chords, you can make it sound like the song.Without actually having to play the song precisely the way it was written.

Even though chording is much faster and easier to learn than classical piano, only by acquiring the ability to read music can you hope to advance to a level of decent piano skill.Again, it all depends on what kind of pianist you want to become. The most important element in your success is regularity. That means regular practice every day. Regardless of the mood you may be in. Only by being regular and consistent can you hope to keep progressing with your piano education.Even if you're not intending to someday play at Carnegie Hall,"practice, practice, practice" should always be your motto. And, if possible, in a quiet, well lit place.
