Learn How To Train Your Voice

By Pamela C Smith

If you intend to forge a career as a professional singer or are just learning to sing as a hobby, tips on how to train your voice will help you to achieve the desired voice quality. Various aspects like posture, breathing, volume and emotions etc will impact your singing performance. So here are a few guidelines to get you started.

Posture: Always start singing while you are standing. Place your feet apart at shoulder width. Bend your knees as you stand because locking them for too long may cause unconsciousness. Hold your back and neck straight. You can hold turn your head upwards or downwards depending on the notes that you want to sing. Try not to turn your head sideways because this will be bad for you neck and look strange. The best way to stand is to look straight ahead and relax.

When practicing you should place your hands on your stomach so that you can monitor your breathing. Breathe deeply and quietly filling your lungs completely. You should breathe through your nose and not your mouth. When you inhale you should feel your abdomen and diaphragm expand upwards and contract when you exhale. The exhalation should be down slowly conserving every last bit of air so that you can reach the higher notes before you need to breathe again.

While singing your mouth should be shaped round, small and circular. You should make sure that you don't open your mouth too much or too less as this will cause hindrance in breathing. By increasing the hollow space inside the mouth you can create more fuller and rounder sounds. To do so you will need to rest your tongue at the floor of your mouth and elongate your jaw slightly. This mouth position will help you to increase the hollow space inside the mouth.

Every word that you sing should be enunciated and be very clear every consonant in the word should be heard. Depending on the song and the effect that you want you may even want to emphasize certain words.

It is imperative that you be able to hear yourself as you sing. There is a really possibility of singing off key if you cannot hear yourself. But be careful with the amount of air you need to sing loudly and softly, since they should ideally both require the same amount of breath. An indication of incorrect singing will be vocal strain. Diaphragmatic breathing will help you to control your volume as you sing. Using your hands forward one after another will serve a cue to increase your volume.

If you want to create the right mood for a song use your emotions and facial expressions to bring in the correct emotions in your words. For example if you wan to create a melancholic effect you will need to need somber expressions on your face.
