Record From Home, Buy Beats Online and Promote Digitally

By Kyle Artzt

There have been some dramatic changes in the way music is created and distributed with the intense digital age having come along. Now anybody can pick up a pen and start writing songs, buy beats and with the invention of clever programs such as Pro Tools and Adobe Audition. You don't need a huge, multi-million dollar studio to get high quality sound anymore.

The real skill to learn now is how to mix/master/produce because if you can pull out a really great mix in your home studio then you literally don't need anything else. Having said that I think that the ability to skillfully record, mix, master and produce is far more important than lyrics or song writing.

Ready for the truth? Rappers don't need to have very many skills to be successful. All you need is a pencil and a piece of paper, not much more! You really don't need to know a lot about music theory, recording or anything else to write a cool rap. Sure rhyme scheme, flow and much more ties into it... But the truth remains: if you wanted to decide to be a rapper and you're not already, all you'd have to do is write a rap and then, technically, you're a rap artist. If you want to produce beats, though, you're going to need a lot more skills.

You can't just learn how to make beats over night, like you could with rapping. You need a whole lot of skills. First of all, to be a producer you NEED to have at least a music production program, or some other kind of equipment for production. Not only that but you also need to know how to effectively mix, master, come up with melodies and notes, drum patterns, etc. You also need to have a good understanding of music theory and if you don't you better have a really, really good music ear. For these reasons there is an abundance of rappers and a lack of beats.

I'm a rapper myself and so I wouldn't argue that rap doesn't take some serious skill (especially if you want to be any good). I'm only suggesting that if you find the right music producer, it's going to dramatically significant to the creation of your music. You're going to continuously waste your time and money by putting your energy into creating music if you're not capturing a license to each beat that you use.

Your spending useless dollars on recording studio time and if you're recording from home you're simply wasting your time. If you don't have a license to every rap beat you use, then you can't even sell your music. Tell me how you're going to make money from your tunes if you don't have the fundamental right to sell?

Beats can be super expensive and cost mega dollars, this I know. This is why most artists don't think to shop around for the right beats.. they just look for whatever they can get their hands on! I know a guy who sells his beats for more than $5k a piece... That's serious money! If you want to find some serious beats at a better price your best bet is to look towards the internet... Again, the digital age has opened up enormous opportunity for all of us! I would suggest checking out Beats4Legends, a legit company with great professional production so you can buy beats at affordable rates. Their customer service is top notch as well.
