Vacations In Scotland With A Difference

By Andrew Kelly

Scotland offers the most glorious countryside in the UK making it a popular vacation destination. The majority of visitors opt for the City of Edinburgh as their main destination, whereas some decide upon something a bit different. The article below looks at Scottish vacations and a variety of things to do while in Scotland. The article also introduces the Wickerman Festival.

With an incredibly diverse countryside the range of things to do is endless. Climbing mountains is tremendously popular, as are hill walking vacations. The most common holidays are golf or fishing. With Scotland being the birthplace of golfing it should not surprise you that that you are hardly ever too far from a minimum of one first class golf course. With the Rivers Tay, Tweed and Spey you are guaranteed of an incredible time fishing. But what if you fancy an altogether different vacation?

Growing numbers of folk are choosing music festivals their annual holiday. Even though nearly all music festivals are enormous with the main aim of making cash, there exists a small selection of music festivals geared towards families, for example Tartan Heart and the Wickerman Festival.

The Wickerman Festival is an yearly music and arts festival takes place on a farm close to Dundrennan in the heart of Dumfries & Galloway roughly 5 miles away from the town of Kirkcudbright in Scotland. The festival theme is the cult movie "The Wicker Man which features Edward Woodward, Sir Christopher Lee, Diane Cilento, Britt Ekland and Ingrid Pitt.

The very first festival took place in two thousand and two and was organized by local man, Sid Ambrose. With little experience of putting together an event of such magnitude it is surprising that it is still held today, especially when you consider the current economic climate. Wickerman has slightly changed each year and, like the movie, has a cult following.

Wickerman is incredibly family friendly it features numerous child orientated activities for example, fairground rides, a mountain biking trail, workshops and face painting. This can be verified easily by searching Google, MSN or Yahoo for 2010 photos of the Wickerman Festival or simply pop along to the official Wickerman Festival Gallery.

Not too far from the festival site is the small village of Kirkudbright where you will find many of the locations used in the film for example Harbour Cottage (the bakery) and High Street Gallery which was used for May Morrison's post office and sweetshop. You will find that there are a large number of places worth visiting in Dumfries and Galloway and it is well worth spending a few days here so that you may visit all of the tourist attractions. Common places in which to stay include Castle Douglas and Dumfries. Bed and breakfast accommodation in Scotland is nearly always excellent and is also priced very reasonably and far cheaper than staying in a hotel.
