Different Genres Of Country Music

By Lou Camassa

Country music started gaining popularity and making its mark during the start of the century. From humble roots in the United States, country has gained recognition all over the world and evolved to the point where there are two types of country music, classic country and mainstream country music. On internet radio, you can find your favorite country hits.

These two separate country styles share some features, but are inherently dissimilar. The composition of the melody, the structure and the chords used are not alike. So which one is better, classic country or mainstream country?

Long time country music listeners are more apt to be in favor of classic country music. The rhythm of the song is easy to remember and understand. Quite frequently the music refers to events and people from bygone days. Classic country music lyrics most often convey a message and are easy to listen to, reflecting lessons of daily life. More people discover classic country on a daily basis, rendering it a profitable niche for recording companies, that continue to profit from the hits of yesteryear. No matter how old a song may be it still has a certain charisma that endears the music to the current generation of radio listeners. You might say it's hard to resist the charm of the old Wild West. Using free online radio, you can locate all your choice country hits.

Mainstream country music, on the other hand, is more popular with the younger generation and combines the old with the new. In recent times, classic country has been mixed with other types of music genres to produce hits that are also popular on radio stations that are not country. These crossover country hits are popular with younger people and country is not the exclusive domain of the over forty crowd. The popularity of newer country music is enhanced by the fact that several country singers have been recent winners of popular singing competitions. Classic country music is still popular because of its charm, but mainstream country music is growing by leaps and bounds in recognition and popularity because it is current, accessible and upbeat.

So which is better? It is really a personal choice, defined by the listener. No matter what type or genre, music connects people. Country music always seems to maintain its popularity, it is evolving, and attracting its share of younger listeners.
