Custom Versus Factory Made Guitars

By Scott Scothern

If you are in the marker for a new guitar, you will discover that you have a number of options. One is to buy your guitar from a local music store, which offers many brands and models, from inexpensive to expensive. Another option is to buy a custom guitar built for you by a Luthier, or guitar maker.

Some guitars you play at the store are great, but you wish you could find one that is just suited for you. You also want a guitar that isn't like everyone else's. You would like one that is a one-of-a kind guitar. Your guitar has to say "look at me"!

Take a look at custom guitars. A custom guitar may be a little more expensive than the high end models at the music store, or not, but you can get exactly what you want. They are also usually high quality instruments.

Most custom guitar makers will meet with you when you contact them. They will sit down you or correspond with you and guide you through the many choices of woods, decorative trim, and options available. They will help you come up with your dream guitar.

You can have your guitar personalized. Would you like some special inlay on the fret board or your initials? Most Luthiers will do this, sometimes included in the price of the guitar.

There are many ways the guitar maker can personalize or customize your guitar. Some of these include the sound of the guitar. He can fine tune your guitar to have more volume in the bass register or to really stand out on the treble side. He can tap tune the top to get the most sustain he can from the woods.

Your guitar can be customized in many other ways as well. You may want the size of the guitar to fit your unique physical characteristics, such as small hands. He can adjust the neck so that it is most comfortable for you play. The guitar maker has many options to truly customize your instrument.
