In many cases flood damage is covered under your insurance policy. But if you choose to restore the carpet by yourself then here are some questions that should be considered::
Is the Carpet Recoverable?
If there is sewage involved you can almost bet you will need to get new. A qualified technician who follows the IICRC standard will most probably throw the carpet away.
Are the Walls also Wet?
Sometimes the water has not only affected the carpet but the water has damaged the walls at the same time. In many cases, it is important to dry the wet walls as well. A professional water damage restorer would have access to inspection equipment including a borescope and moisture meter to determine any damage. One way to dry inside walls is to drill holes underneath the skirting board and duct air into the cavity.
The wood floors underneath the carpet may also be wet.
Timber floors can easily expand, buckle and bow when they are wet. One way a professional can dry this is by using an Injectidry to suck the moisture out of the floor. Vacuum plates are placed on the floor over a period of time to take the moisture out of the subfloor. Typically there is a dehumidifier placed in the middle of the room to suck the moisture out of the air. It must be noted that an Injectidry system may solved the problem in all situations.
How to restore the water damaged carpets
A common method of doing this is by placing an air mover between the carpet and the underlay so that there is air blowing between. The carpet is effectively what we call tented. Again this may not be a suitable drying method for all cases. Also, sometimes the carpet underlay may need to be completely taken out and dried elsewhere, or replaced.
Is there foam underlay installed underneath the carpet?
Most homes that we have see in Australia have either rubber or foam underlay. Please note that foam in some situations can take a long time to dry. As mentioned earlier, it may be more cost effective to replace foam underlay.
These are just some of the issues that need to be taken into account. It is just important to note that Mould can cause a lot of problems in properties that have not been dried down to acceptable moisture limits. Which is why is important to consult an IICRC (Institute of Cleaning and Restoration Certification) professional to ensure the carpets are dried properly.
