Jazz Drum Loops And All That Jazz

By Hank Jones

Music and jazz drum loops has evolved over the years and has since come a long way from the eighteen and nineteenth century. Back then the orchestra and military percussion laid the groundwork for some of the best music known worldwide. Many different types of instruments were used and arranged in various combinations to create music that we know today.

The combination of many instruments throughout the years evolved into the greatest music the world has ever known. Just think about the many pieces that were played in bands that represented various holidays, states or groups of people. Although the sounds of various instruments were monumental in creating music of today, it would not have the results that it did without the addition of the drums.

In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, the orchestra and military percussion laid some major groundwork which would eventually evolve into some of the earliest examples of jazz drumming. In the twentieth century drumming began using some of the same basic patterns that were originally used by the military band drummers and putting a little swing into them. The role that drums have taken has had many different sounds when it comes to jazz music.

When jazz music was the main music in America, dance halls and other such places would be filled with people dancing to Swing music. Banging away in the background was of course, the drummer. In later years as music evolved, credit for the creativity of the drummer suddenly became recognized.

This recognition gave the time keeper an opportunity to be known in the sound industry. It also provided a chance for employment within any group or band if it was desired. So much has transpired from those long ago days when the drum loop was heard only to keep the music in tune during parades and other noted musical benefits.

Without the drummer in the early years one must think about how the recordings of today would sound like. Shrill and dull, out of tune with the words, basically just a bunch of people making noise.

Music is an important part of American history and the instruments have evolved greatly within the last hundred years. Jazz music started out with a time keeper, to introducing drum loops, to letting the drummer bring his/her own creativity into the music, and produced great sounds within the music genre of Swing, which we have grown to love.
