Music is the vein of my life. The mood and tempo can easily turn my attitude around and give me hope on days I'm feeling down. I never thought I would one day be making songs that others could draw inspiration from.
The whole notion of making music always scared me. I always thought you had to be born with a gift. I was born with none. When I was young the triangle was the only instrument I wanted to play in music class, and I still had trouble staying on beat.
The decade I came up in was the 80's, so I used to listen to all kinds of music. I liked Rakim, the Beastie Boys, and Pete Rock. I also loved pop music. I listened to a lot of the Jacksons, U2, and Tina Turner. These are the performers that introduced me to music.
Today I would say the way I listen to music has evolved. The artists that I listen to have changed also. I admit I enjoy artists like Avril Lavigne, Drake, and some that are independent. Once a week me and my friends get together and go to this musicians showcase down the street from my apartment. The new artists that perform there are phenomenal, and they are always different. Nobody in my crew is a musician. We are all just lovers of music.
One night in particular we were there and the show was just about coming to a close. Just as the master of ceremonies was closing everything down one of my good friends walked onto the stage. To all of our surprise he started performing a song. We couldn't believe how good it was. After he left the stage we all congratulated him on the fantastic job he did. Everybody wanted to own the song because it was so good. That's when he revealed to us he composed it all by himself.
I inquired about the equipment he used to make the song and he told me what it was. It was software that you had to buy online. I was a little distressed because I never purchase anything online. I feel like there is too much fraud going on and I don't want to be a victim. When you look at products it always seems like everybody is making false claims. However, I just could not stop thinking about the song my friend performed. I had so much inside me that I wanted to express, so I put my fears to the side and tried it out.
The program was extremely easy to use and I couldn't believe it. Nothing about it was super technical, I felt like an expert within minutes. There was one part that I couldn't get past and that made me angry for a minute. To my surprise they had a tutorial that showed me how to do everything and I got through it with ease. After an hour on the software I had my first beat completed. I made an MP3 out of it and put it on my phone so I could listen to it all day.
After that I sat in my room and wrote the lyrics out. Exactly one month after my friend performed his song I performed mine for the first time. It was about the first girl that I have ever loved and how she exited my life. There was not a dry eye in the house, and I felt so accomplished.
So if I can do it from scratch and no experience so can you. I still don't consider myself a musician but I make songs and I also make beats online. The question is why can't you do it too? You can do anything in life you put your mind to.
